Esta exposição individual do artista mexicano Damián Ortega, patente no Freud Museum, em Londres, cruza arte e ciência e resulta de um projecto de cooperação com o Gashaka Primate Project da University College London. O artista foi convidado a visitar a selva africana e a produzir um conjunto de trabalhos a partir dessa visita. A exposição é o resultado final dessa viagem e do trabalho realizado entre Ortega e a curadora luso-brasileira Luiza Teixeira de Freitas.
Na sua prática artística, Damián Ortega combina vários media: escultura, instalação, vídeo, fotografia, entre outros. O artista inspira-se numa grande variedade de objectos do quotidiano: bolas de golfe, tijolos, latas de lixo e até comida, todos eles sujeitos ao que tem sido descrito como “um processo perverso de transformação” característico da sua obra.
Para esta exposição, o artista foi convidado a visitar a região de Gashaka na Nigéria: um dos últimos redutos selvagens, da África Ocidental, onde vivem subespécies raras de chimpanzés e onde o referido Gashaka Primate Project está sediado. Um projecto que desafia os limites da fronteira que divide arte e ciência e que explora essas divisões e transgressões através do trabalho de Damián Ortega. Ao contrário do cientista – objectivo e analítico, o artista contextualiza, as especificidades do mundo natural e, também, os aspectos culturais, de forma mais subtil e subjectiva – reiterando, assim, a teoria de Sigmund Freud que considerava a psique o cerne da nossa existência.
A crueza dos materiais, a atenção dada aos simples detalhes da vida quotidiana e o uso sensível da matéria, são características que conferem um significado singular ao corpo de trabalho de Damián Ortega. O artista está interessado na lenta e articulada sucessão de factos e situações similares às de um organismo de comunicação. Para Ortega, a importância dos objectos reside nas ideias que os mesmos geram. Os chimpanzés de Gashaka, como outros primatas, desenvolveram uma cultura própria – o que coloca em causa a teoria freudiana de homem versus animal, bem como a da cultura vs natureza. Damián Ortega pretende analisar de que forma esses conceitos binários são, actualmente, válidos.
Este projecto com curadoria de Luiza Teixeira de Freitas conta, também, com a participação do biólogo Gonçalo Jesus e de Volker Sommer, fundador do Gashaka Primate Project e professor de Antropologia Evolucionista na University College London.
The Freud Museum comes together with the University College London´s Gashaka Primate Project to present ‘Apestraction’ – a solo exhibition of works by Mexican artist Damián Ortega.
Ortega is well known for his practice, that ranges from sculptures, installations, videos, photographs and actions inspired by a wide range of mundane objects, from golf balls and pick-axes to bricks, rubbish bins and even tortillas, all subjected to what has been described as Ortega’s characteristically “mischievous process of transformation and dysfunction”.
The artist was invited to visit the Gashaka region in Nigeria: one of the last remaining wildernesses in West Africa, where the rarest subspecies of chimpanzees survives and where the Gashaka Primate Project has its base. By taking an artist to the wilderness, bridges and boundaries between Art and Science are instinctively created. This exhibition explores these divisions and their transgressions through the work of Ortega. Unlike a dissecting and objectifying scientist, an artist will be able to contextualize the sensitivities of our natural and cultural side in a more nuanced, private and subjectified way – thus honoring Freud’s idea that our psyche is at the heart of our existence.
The rawness of materials, the attention to simple details of everyday life and the sensitive use of matter, are all features that add a central layer of significance to Damián Ortega’s body of work. Ortega is interested in the slow, articulated succession of things and situations where something generates something else resembling a large organism of communication. For him the importance of objects lies in the ideas they generate. The Gashaka chimpanzees, like apes elsewhere, seem to have developed a culture of their own – blurring the traditional Freudian boundaries of human versus animal as well as culture versus nature. Damián Ortega aims to explore through his art how valid these binary concepts are in today’s world.
This exhibition is curated by Luiza Teixeira de Freitas. The project is a collaboration between the curator, biologist Gonçalo Jesus and Volker Sommer, founder of the Gashaka Primate Project and Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at University College London.
As part of this collaboration a series of performances will take place at the St. Elisabeth-Kirche in Berlin from the 19th until the 21st of September.
Luiza Teixeira de Freitas (Rio de Janeiro, 1984) is an independent curator working between London and Lisbon. She is Development Organiser for Chisenhale Gallery in London and works as a curator with private collections. She is also actively involved with artists books and independent publishing projects and is co-curator of ARCO´s 2014 Opening programme in Madrid.
