‘Normally I underplay facial expression when painting the figure, because I want expression to emerge through the body.
I used to do only heads, but came to feel that I relied too much on the face. I want the head, as it were, to be more like another limb.
“I want paint to work as flesh… my portraits to be of the people, not like them. Not having a look of the sitter, being them … As far as I am concerned the paint is the person. I want it to work for me just as flesh does.”
